Review Anthology of Article: Sex, God & Country (Seks, Tuhan & Negara)

Sex, God, & Country is one of the books with feminist nuances that was written by Soe Tjen Marching and published in 2020. It is divided into three prime sections: Sex & Gender, Country & Authority, along with God, Dogma, and Religion.

In the direction of the Sex & Gender section, we can find several case studies that occurred in Indonesia or involved its inhabitants. Such as the decision to marry a rapist with their victims, or Reynhard Sinaga with his sexually violent cases until he acquired the epithet of 'the most productive' rapist in England, but instead of cursing his actions that undermined the beliefs of his victims and raped them, there are still many Indonesians who focus more on Reynhard's sexual orientation and associating people with different sexual orientations as villains. The brutal repression of human sexual needs includes the extreme classification of women with hymen and without hymen before marriage, up to the overview of the risks of a lack of sexual education, which then causes the majority of young Indonesians to fill their curiosity about sex through access to pornography, or the worst part is trying to act pornographically against those around them, which can be an act of sexual violence.

Afterwards, in the second section of this book entitled Country & Authority, more case study analysis is found in the paradigm of national history and related to the enforcement of human rights issues. For example, communism in Indonesia and the discussion of the reconciliation of the 1965 genocide that succeeded in dividing society into 2 groups, namely those who agreed to minimize the potential for greater conflict if they decided to reopen cases of human rights violence that potentially involved many authority figures, and those who are still struggling to find the truth behind this killing case.

Completed by the overview related to the choices between kebaya and jilbab as Indonesia's identity along with there are many cases that happened in several Indonesian educational institutions regarding the forced use of hijab, or case studies of contempt for one of public figures who chose to let go her jilbab. All of it is based only on religious reasons without paying more attention to the comfort aspect of school students and related figures, which is actually also a part of their human rights in the study process and in terms of freedom of expression.

The third part has the title God, Dogma, and Religion, which contains more discussion of timeless issues such as the choice of abortion in women and secularism and atheism in religious countries such as Indonesia. This anthology book has been very comprehensive in describing problems that often occur in vulnerable groups, especially women, LGBT, and children, in religious and state life.
